how can an outdated library be transformed into a community gathering space with cutting edge educational opportunities?

DURHAM COUNTY LIBRARY

Durham’s Main Library has been transformed into a community hub with linked indoor and outdoor spaces that extend learning beyond the library’s walls.

The newly renovated Durham County Main Library serves as an anchor for the east end of Durham’s vibrant downtown core. The library is a located at the nexus of Durham’s City Center, which hosts several County service centers that are vital to the surrounding community, and the adjacent residential neighborhoods of East Durham. The renovated library will function both as a County-wide “flagship” and a local library. The architectural improvements will address the modernization of the library program spaces and building façade, among other improvements.

Andropogon’s site design links interior and exterior learning spaces by creating outdoor classroom and event spaces, a play space, an urban agricultural zone, an outdoor maker space, and a 3,000 SF partially accessible green roof. An ample, inviting entrance plaza and improved streetscape will transform this once isolated landmark into, as the client describes, “Durham’s community living room”.
