master plan & site design | pittsburgh, pa
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden constructed the Center for Sustainable Landscapes on a former brownfield site to showcase cutting-edge environmental design. Andropogon worked closely with an integrated design team of architects, engineers, and stakeholders to ensure that the new facility would meet the rigorous criteria of the Living Building Challenge and achieve four starts from the Sustainable Site Initiative. The Center generates 100 percent of the building’s energy on-site and harvests enough precipitation and gray water to supply the building’s water needs. Andropogon’s design manages and treats 100% of the project’s stormwater and wastewater as mandated by the Living Building Challenge. The new facility is a true living building and a demonstration facility like none other in the world. (Photographs by P. Wiegman)
